Supreme Guide Mojtaba Khamenei estimated in a written statement made public this Thursday, June 4, that the United States and Israel were seeking to “divide” the Iranian nation, after having suffered a “stinging setback” in the war launched against his country.

“Their main tool”, to weaken Iran, “is to sow the seeds of doubt, despair, fear, distrust and division”, says Mojtaba Khamenei in a text read in public, adding that the “malicious enemy” has suffered a “bitter setback on the battlefield”.

These remarks were read at the mausoleum of Ayatollah Khomeini in Tehran, on the occasion of the 37th anniversary of the death of the founder of the Islamic Republic.

“Faced with these disastrous intentions, everyone must, through firmness, clairvoyance, preservation of unity and cohesion, mutual trust and refusal to relay the enemy’s propaganda, neutralize his sinister plot,” adds the message.

No public appearance

On the death of Rouhollah Khomeini in 1989, Ali Khamenei succeeded him as supreme guide, before being killed on February 28 on the first day of the Israeli-American offensive which triggered a regional war in Middle East.

Mojtaba Khamenei succeeded his father, but since his appointment in early March as third supreme guide of the Islamic Republic he has made no public appearance, only written statements being attributed to him. At the mausoleum of Imam Khomeini, faithful hold up portraits of the three leaders, according to images from state television.

Others wave the flag of the Islamic Republic, but also of Lebanese Hezbollah, a movement supported financially, politically and militarily by Tehran and in the fight against Israel, their common sworn enemy.

Every June 4 since 1989, the late Supreme Guide Ali Khamenei used to give a speech on the occasion of this commemoration. This year, an empty chair with his portrait was installed at the mausoleum, according to images from state television.
