Tore Sandvik, Norwegian Minister of Defense: “The new NATO, in which Europe is committed to investing more, will be much stronger”

INTERVIEW – France and Norway have just signed an agreement, confirming the Scandinavian country’s participation in the French advanced nuclear deterrent initiative.

The Norwegian Minister of Defense, Tore Sandvik, details the content of the Narvik Agreement, signed Wednesday evening with his French counterpart, Catherine Vautrin, in the presence of President Emmanuel Macron and Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store.

LE FIGARO. – France and Norway have been members of NATO since 1949. Why are they signing a mutual defense agreement today?

TORE SANDVIK. – The new NATO, within which Europe is committed to investing more in its defense, will be much stronger. But it will not be enough to increase this effort to 5% of our gross domestic product. We must also ensure that we spend better and more intelligently. The Americans have made it clear to us that we are going to have to share the burden more equitably. Their request is not completely new, even if we were not used to it being expressed this way.
