The new supreme leader of Iran, Mojtaba Khamenei, is facing significant challenges as he tries to lead the country following a series of severe injuries. According to the New York Times, Mojtaba Khamenei, who took over from his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, is physically and politically weakened.
Mojtaba Khamenei was gravely injured in a bombing at his family residence in Tehran, which killed his father, wife, and son. He survived, but with critical injuries requiring multiple surgeries and ongoing rehabilitation. He has not been seen or heard from publicly since his appointment in March.
Due to his health condition, Mojtaba Khamenei now lives in seclusion under the care of a medical team, with even senior officials avoiding visits to avoid being targeted. Despite his injuries, Mojtaba Khamenei is described as lucid and engaged, but the limited access to him has led to a transfer of power.
Decisions are now being made by a group of commanders from the Revolutionary Guards, as Mojtaba Khamenei continues to recover from his injuries. The situation remains complex as he awaits further surgeries and a prosthesis.
