Researchers recorded 65 conflicts between states – involving at least one government – ​​the highest number since systematic record-keeping began in 1946.

The report estimates that around 245,000 people will have died in war-related violence in 2025, making this year one of the deadliest in recent decades.

“The world today… is far more fragmented,” PRIO said, describing the “unprecedented” number of simultaneous wars fueled by both protracted crises and new outbreaks of large-scale conflict. scale.

Researchers cite as examples the escalation of the conflict in Ukraine, Israel’s war in Gaza and the civil war in Sudan.

The number of conflicts between countries has doubled from 2024, reaching a record high of eight in 2025, including clashes between India and Pakistan, Afghanistan and Pakistan, and Cambodia and Thailand.

The PRIO reported that 65 conflicts have been recorded in 35 countries, with some countries involved in several wars simultaneously.

For example, Israel is involved in conflicts related to Gaza, Syria, Lebanon, Iran and Yemen, while Myanmar, Pakistan and Nigeria also face several armed conflicts.

Africa is the region most affected by state violence, followed by Asia, the Middle East, the Americas and Europe.

According to PRIO, more than 930,000 people have died in state-sponsored conflicts since 2021, almost as many as the total number of deaths recorded over the previous two decades.
