The army will no longer require mandatory flu vaccinations for soldiers. This decision was announced in a video by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who criticized the previous policy as “absurd” and “excessive” and claimed it weakened combat capabilities. Hegseth stated that he wanted to “restore the freedom of the armed forces” by allowing soldiers to choose whether to get vaccinated based on their own judgment. He emphasized that they would not be forced, as their body, faith, and convictions are non-negotiable.
To justify this decision, the Defense Secretary referenced an incident during the Covid-19 pandemic under the Biden administration, where over 8000 soldiers were fired for refusing vaccination. Hegseth lamented that they were “forced to choose between their conscience and their country, even though these decisions posed no threat to our military operational capacity.” He called this era of “betrayal” revolting.
The United States made flu vaccination mandatory in the military since 1945, after the Second World War, to protect against biological weapons. The decision by Hegseth triggered a strong reaction from Democratic Colorado parliamentarian Jason Crow, who criticized it as “irresponsible” and endangering the military’s operational capabilities.
Former military nurse Dr. Riccardi, now the director of the George Washington University Health Policy Center, denounced the decision as a “serious error in judgment” and emphasized the importance of vaccination in protecting troops from the rapid spread of flu in communal living and working conditions.
In contrast, during his first term, Donald Trump emphasized the importance of flu vaccination to limit severe cases and hospital overcrowding during the Covid pandemic. However, the mandatory Covid vaccination policy by the Biden administration in 2021 fueled distrust. Additionally, the appointment of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as the Minister of Health in Trump’s second term contributed to the spread of anti-vaccination rhetoric. Kennedy Jr. claimed that a flu vaccine caused him neurological issues and changed his voice.
