Victim of a serious motorcycle accident, former Greek footballer Marios Oikonomou is currently between life and death in a university hospital in Ioannina. An investigation was opened by local authorities.
Concern is growing in Greece. The 33-year-old former footballer Marios Oikonomou was the victim of a serious motorcycle accident this weekend in Ioánnina, in the northwest of the country. According to the local press, his motorcycle collided with a car in circumstances that an investigation opened by the authorities will try to clarify.
Quickly treated, the former Greek international (6 caps) was hospitalized in intensive care at the city’s university hospital, suffering from serious head injuries, Sport24 first reported.
Two craniectomies were performed
This Monday, News24/7 announced that the former Cagliari, Bologna, AEK Athens and Copenhagen player was still fighting for his life, after having undergone two craniectomies to decompress his brain. A new scan had to be taken to allow his condition to be reassessed.
“The patient remains intubated in intensive care. We are within 24 hours of the intervention and his condition remains critical”, communicated the director of the hospital, Spyros Derdemezis after having spoken the day before of “extremely critical situation”. “Medical protocol is scrupulously respected. By definition, anyone in intensive care finds themselves in a delicate situation.” The medical team closely monitors the evolution of the cerebral edema after the neurosurgical intervention.
Marios Oikonomou has spent most of his career in Italy, from Cagliari to Bologna, passing through Bari and Sampdoria. A central defender, he also played two seasons in Denmark at FC Copenhagen. He hung up his crampons in July 2024 after a final stint at Panetolikos, in Greece.
