The name of Jerome Powell, the now ex-president of the Federal Reserve (Fed), is sure to go down in posterity as that of the man who dared to resist Donald Trump, believes Bloomberg, which takes stock of its “eight tumultuous years at the head of the most powerful central bank in the worldâ€.
Nicknamed “Too Late†(“Too late†) and treated as“the drunkards†, of “naughty†and of “perfect moron†by the American president for his refusal to quickly lower interest rates, Jerome Powell showed himself unshakeable in the face of the multiple pressures (not just verbal) exerted by the tenant of the White House from the start of his second term.
Bloomberg recalls in passing an anthology scene dated last July: the President of the United States and the President of the Fed inspecting side by side the renovation site of the headquarters of the institution, in Washington, both wearing a construction helmet in the summer heat.
Purpose of the operation: to demonstrate that Powell was only an incompetent civil servant, incapable of controlling the costs of the site. The boss of the Central Bank then put on his glasses to examine the document supposed to prove his negligence, before calmly explaining, in front of the cameras, that there was an error in the figures.
