Lebanon “is today in a situation of vital danger”, believes Jean-Yves Le Drian

“Lebanon is today in a situation of vital danger”estimates Thursday June 11 on France Inter Jean-Yves Le Drian, personal representative of the President of the Republic in the country. The former Minister of Foreign Affairs has returned from Lebanon, a country which is the “direct victim of a conflict that is not his own”he said. More than 3,600 people have been killed in Lebanon in Israeli strikes since the start of the war.

While strikes have resumed in recent hours between the United States and Iran. Tehran demands that Lebanon, where its ally Hezbollah and Israel have been clashing since March 2, be included in any agreement to end the war. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, for his part, calls on the Lebanese to “join” his country’s fight against pro-Iranian Hezbollah.

Lebanon “is threatened in its unity, in its integrity and in its sovereignty”, says Jean-Yves Le Drian. “He is threatened in his unit because the fact that there are many displaced refugees leads to tensions between the different communities”he explains. “There is the risk of territorial integrity since today Lebanon is partly occupied by Israel in South Lebanon, so it is no longer master at home, it no longer has control of its territory.” As for its sovereignty, it is threatened by “the fact that the State does not have a monopoly on arms, that Hezbollah is opposed to giving up its arms” et “the fact that there is an internal economic crisis which has not yet been resolved.”

“The fact that Lebanon is being sacrificed in this way strengthens the weight of Hezbollah.”

“It’s very worrying for the future”Jean-Yves Le Drian is alarmed.

Negotiations that took place between Lebanon and Israel in early June resulted in an agreement on “the implementation of a ceasefire” but the Israeli army continues its raids on the country and Hezbollah its attacks against Israeli forces. “The mere fact that there is a direct relationship between the Lebanese authorities and the Israeli authorities is progress. The mere fact that we are moving forward on a potential trajectory of resolving the conflict is progress and we must support this.”believes Jean-Yves Le Drian, who campaigns for the continuation of negotiations.
