Middle East: ceasefire in Lebanon, attack in Kuwait, death of a peacekeeper… the summary of June 4, 2026 | TF1 Info

AT LEAST 11 DEAD IN GAZA

Israeli bombings left eleven dead in Gaza City and its surroundings, said a spokesperson for the civil defense of the Palestinian territory. Nine people were killed in strikes on apartments in the northwest and southwest of Gaza City, Mahmoud Bassal told AFP.

Two others died in drone strikes in the southwest of the city and in the center, against police personnel. A heavy toll, despite a ceasefire in force since last October.

ISRAELI STRIKES

Israeli strikes left eight dead and eight injured in eastern and southern Lebanon, the Health Ministry announced. Five people were killed in a strike in the east of the country and three others near the southern city of Tyre, despite the announcement of a new ceasefire.

ISRAELI SOLDIER KILLED IN SOUTHERN LEBANON

The Israeli army announces that one of its soldiers was killed in southern Lebanon, its first loss since the announcement of a new ceasefire agreement yesterday.

Captain Eitan Shmuel Lemberg, 21, “fell in combat,” the army said in a brief statement. A military source told AFP that he was killed by a missile fired by Hezbollah towards an Israeli tank.

ATTACK IN KUWAIT

Marco Rubio condemned “the scandalous and unacceptable attacks” attributed to Iran which targeted Kuwait’s airport. A press release published by the spokesperson for the Secretary of State a few hours after a meeting in Washington between Marco Rubio and his Kuwaiti counterpart.

DEATH OF A BLUE HELMET

IRANIAN NUCLEAR

The lack of access to Iranian nuclear sites is a “cause for concern in terms of proliferation” writes the International Atomic Energy Agency in a confidential report.

“Although the Agency recognizes that the military attacks against Iranian nuclear installations and sites have created an unprecedented situation, it is crucial that it can carry out verification activities in Iran without delay”, indicates the report consulted by AFP, in which the IAEA calls on Iran to “cooperate constructive way”.

ARMY MOVEMENTS

The Lebanese army will begin to deploy “in pilot areas” in the south, announces the country’s Prime Minister. This is a “first step”, “concrete and tangible” which “does not prejudice our right to a total withdrawal” from Israel, declared Nawaf Salam.

An announcement which comes as the ceasefire agreement between Lebanon and Israel mentions the establishment of these zones controlled exclusively by the army after the Israeli withdrawal from parts of southern Lebanon.

REFUSAL OF HEZBOLLAH

Hezbollah informed the Lebanese authorities of its refusal of the ceasefire agreement announced in Washington between Lebanon and Israel, said a leader of the pro-Iranian group quoted by AFP.

This position, previously announced by the leader of Hezbollah, was transmitted “to the President of Parliament”, an ally of the Shiite group, who “shares the same position”, added the official.

EMMANUEL MACRON ANSWERS US

FRANCE “STANDS AT AVAILABLE”

Emmanuel Macron once again supported a ceasefire in Lebanon under several conditions. Questioned by TF1/LCI in Podgorica, Montenegro, the head of state recalled that France “obviously stands ready to move forward” on the path to a “lasting peace”, while giving its conditions. First, “reactivate” the “coordination mechanism” in which “the United States and France are together”. “We must then define the ways and means to restore Lebanese sovereignty”, argued the President of the Republic, concluding on the importance of the Lebanese armed forces having “a monopoly on arms”. “Arms monopoly for the Lebanese armed forces, territorial integrity and sovereignty over its territory”, three criteria that France defends and “which we are ready to support”.

‘GLOBAL’ CEASEFIRE

Hezbollah warns: there will be no security for northern Israel without security for the villages of southern Lebanon. In a message broadcast by his party’s channel, the leader of Hezbollah, Naïm Qassem, called for a “global ceasefire” in the country, accompanied by a withdrawal of Israeli troops, calling on the Lebanese authorities to “stop the charade” of negotiations with Israel.

DEATH OF A RUE HELMET: ISRAEL ACCUSES HEZBOLLAH

A UNIFIL force soldier was killed Wednesday evening in southern Lebanon, by a strike of undetermined origin, while Hezbollah and Israel continue their operations in this region. “Analysis of the trajectory of the shots clearly shows that they were carried out by the terrorist organization Hezbollah,” said the Israeli army in a press release.

HEZBOLLAH DENOUNCES WASHINGTON AGREEMENT

The ceasefire agreement signed in Washington by Israel and Lebanon is “a capitulation and a defeat”, declares the secretary general of Hezbollah, Naïm Qassem. The latter calls on Lebanon to “stop the charade and humiliation of negotiations” with Israel. He demands a “comprehensive ceasefire” and an Israeli withdrawal from Lebanon, saying that the security of northern Israel will not be guaranteed if that of southern Lebanese villages is not.

TRUMP DENOUNCES CONGRESS’ “ANTIPATRIOTIC” VOTE

“Yesterday, by a useless vote, the House voted, because of 4 bad Republicans and all the Dumocrats, to limit my military powers, right in the middle of my final negotiations to end the war with the Islamic Republic of Iran. Who can do such an unpatriotic act?” exclaims Donald Trump, on his Truth Social network.

The resolution voted by the deputies, ordering the withdrawal of American troops in the war against Iran, has a primarily symbolic significance, due to the right of veto of the American president.

“LAST CHANCE” AGREEMENT

The agreement announced in Washington constitutes “the last chance to achieve a global and definitive ceasefire” with Israel, said Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, adding to await “the response” from pro-Iranian Hezbollah. He undertook to transmit the group’s response to the United States, whose president will be “the guarantor” of the application of this agreement for a ceasefire conditional on a “complete cessation” of Hezbollah fire.

“Each party must take responsibility if it does not respond favorably,” he stressed.

A message from Hezbollah Secretary General Naïm Qassem is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. GMT.

IRAN WANTS ISRAELI WITHDRAWAL FROM LEBANON

The Revolutionary Guards demanded on Thursday the withdrawal of the Israeli army from Lebanon, where it is carrying out a ground operation in the south against Hezbollah, supported by Tehran.

“Supporting the resistance in Lebanon is the duty of each of us, and driving Israel from the region is an achievable goal for Muslims,” wrote General Esmaël Qaani, head of the Quds Force, the external operations branch of the Guardians.

“The minimum demand of the resistance is the withdrawal of the usurping regime (Israel, Editor’s note) and its return to the positions it occupied before the start of the war” against Iran at the end of February, added Mr. Qaani. Despite a ceasefire in November 2024 in a previous conflict, the Israeli army then maintained five positions in this region.

THE BLUE HELMET KILLED WAS OF SERBIAN NATIONALITY

The peacekeeper killed in southern Lebanon was Serbian, said the Serbian Defense Ministry, adding that he died “as a result of injuries caused by the fall of a missile on the UN base”.

Master Sergeant Milovan Jovanovic, born in 1989, “received emergency medical treatment at a hospital inside the base after being injured, then was transported by helicopter to the Center University Medical Center of Beirut, where he died around 4:00 a.m. local time,” the statement said.

1 BLUE HELMET DEAD, 2 INJURED

The UN peace force in Lebanon announces that three peacekeepers were injured by mortar shell strikes on Wednesday evening. One of them died from his injuries this morning.

A peacekeeper was killed and two others injured in southern Lebanon, where mortar fire hit their base, the UN peacekeeping force announced.

In a press release, the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) specifies that the attack occurred late Wednesday evening. A security source told AFP that the shots had hit the UNIFIL base in Ibl al-Saqi.

KHAMENEI SPEAKS OF “STINGER BACK” FOR WASHINGTON AND TEL AVIV

Mojtaba Khamenei, Iran’s supreme leader, said in a written statement that the United States and Israel were seeking to “divide” the Iranian nation, after suffering a “bitter setback on the battlefield” in the war against her country.

“Their main tool” to weaken Iran “is to sow the seeds of doubt, despair, fear, mistrust and division,” writes Mojtaba Khamenei, in a text read in public.

“Faced with these disastrous intentions, everyone must, through firmness, clairvoyance, preservation of unity and cohesion, mutual trust and refusal to relay the enemy’s propaganda, neutralize his sinister plot,” adds the message.

ISRAEL WILL CONTINUE ITS OPERATIONS IN SOUTHERN LEBANON

In a press release, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz affirms that the agreement announced overnight for a ceasefire in Lebanon provides for the continuation of Israeli operations.

This “declaration of principles” between Israel and the government of Lebanon provides in southern Lebanon “that the army, at this stage, continues its shooting and its operations on the ground” and maintains itself in the border “security zone” “including in the Beaufort sector and without return of the (Lebanese) population”, according to the press release.

In addition, the agreement also provides for “freedom of action for Israel, with the approval of the United States, to strike Beirut in response to shootings on Israeli localities and territory”, asserts the minister.

US CONGRESS VOTES TO END IRAN WAR

The American House of Representatives adopted a text on Wednesday evening ordering the withdrawal of American troops in the war against Iran, a snub for Donald Trump who engaged the United States in this conflict on February 28.

The resolution – adopted with the votes of four Republican deputies – however has a primarily symbolic significance, due to the American president’s right of veto.

ALERT IN NORTHERN ISRAEL

The Israeli army announced Thursday morning that a “hostile aircraft infiltration” had triggered an air alert in a village in northern Israel, near the border with Lebanon.

“Sirens sounded in the Arab al-Aramshe region to signal the intrusion of a hostile aircraft. The details are being examined,” the Israeli army wrote on social networks.

TOWARDS A CEASEFIRE IN LEBANON?

Israel and Lebanon agreed this Wednesday evening, after two days of talks in Washington, to condition a ceasefire on a “complete cessation” of Hezbollah fire and to create “pilot zones” under the control of the Lebanese army.

“At the end of the negotiations carried out under the aegis of the United States, Israel and Lebanon have agreed to the implementation of a ceasefire”, we can read in a joint declaration between the three parties to the Washington negotiations. It will be subject “to the complete cessation of Hezbollah fire” – which rejects these discussions – and the “evacuation” of all members of the Lebanese movement from the sector located south of the Litani River, around thirty kilometers from the border with Israel, it was added.

The parties also “agreed to rapidly advance the establishment of pilot zones in which the Lebanese Armed Forces will exercise exclusive control over the territory, to the exclusion of all non-state actors”, a reference to Hezbollah, according to the same source.

Israel and Lebanon also agreed to participate in a new session of talks the week of June 22 with a view to a “comprehensive agreement,” the statement added.
