The attacks carried out by Russia in Ukraine did not fail to make the President of the Republic react this Thursday. Emmanuel Macron sees this as proof of the “weakness” of Moscow which “does not know how to end its war of aggression”.
“By launching a new massive drone and missile strike against Ukrainian towns and civilians – the largest in the last four years – Russia is further aggravating the crime of its aggression,” the head of state wrote on the social network X.
“She reveals all the hypocrisy with which she negotiated the fragile truce of the last days. By bombing civilians, Russia is less demonstrating its strength than its weakness: it is short of solutions on the military front and does not know how to end its war of aggression,” he believes, moreover. He also recalls that “France stands alongside Ukraine and the Ukrainian people and will continue to mobilize to obtain a cessation of hostilities and bring about a just and lasting peace for Ukraine, which guarantees its security and that of Europe.”
On X, Volodymyr Zelensky thanked the French president for his “support”. “We must do everything to ensure that Europe has its own air defense systems of all types, including ballistic missile defense,” he added.
For her part, the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen affirms that Russia “openly mocks” the diplomatic efforts underway to bring peace to Ukraine. “While Russia openly mocks diplomatic efforts, we continue to strengthen Ukraine,” she continued on X, lamenting “another night of death and destruction.”
A massive Russian drone and missile attack
At least five people died and around forty others were injured Thursday during a massive Russian drone and missile attack on Ukraine, which notably hit the capital kyiv. This attack comes 48 hours after the expiration of a truce between Moscow and kyiv.
Russia launched 675 drones and 56 missiles, according to the Ukrainian air force, which claims to have shot down 652 and 41 respectively — a wave of air attacks among the most significant in recent weeks.
According to Volodymyr Zelensky, a vehicle of a UN humanitarian mission was hit by Russian drones in the south of the country, without causing any injuries. The Ukrainian president, who urges his allies to put pressure on Moscow to put an end to the Russian invasion launched more than four years ago, has once again called for a strong reaction.
“There must be a fair response to all these strikes,” he wrote on social networks.
Negotiations between Moscow and kyiv under American mediation to end the bloodiest conflict in Europe since the Second World War have been on hold since the start of hostilities in the Middle East at the end of February.
