Prince Harry, arrived on Thursday in Kiev during a surprise visit, called on Russian President Vladimir Putin to end over four years of war in Ukraine, while urging the United States to play a crucial role in the negotiations.

“It is still time, now, to end this war”

Speaking at the Security Forum in Kiev, in the presence of journalists including AFP, he directly addressed the Russian president.

“President Putin, no nation benefits from the continued human losses we are witnessing. It is still time, now, to end this war. To prevent further suffering for the Ukrainians as well as the Russians, and to choose another path,” he said.

“This is a moment for American governance”

Prince Harry also urged the United States to play a leading role, as American mediation between Kiev and Moscow has been suspended since the outbreak of the war in the Middle East at the end of February.

“This is a moment for American governance, a moment for America to show that it can honor its obligations arising from international treaties, not out of charity, but because of its enduring role in global security and strategic stability,” he declared.

Ukraine an example of “governance” and “unity”

He also praised Ukraine as an example of “governance” and “unity” since the beginning of the Russian invasion. “The Ukrainian people have accomplished something extraordinary. You have adapted, you have stood firm, and you have stayed the course,” he said.

The Ukrainian Center for Countering Disinformation as well as the railways had previously posted a video on social media showing Prince Harry disembarking from a train in the Ukrainian capital.
