Le Mans will have to wait for the celebration. While they thought they were officially in Ligue 1 after scoring a second goal against Bastia in stoppage time, the Le Mans players were forced to return to the locker rooms after fireworks and agricultural bombs were thrown. The match was officially stopped after a somewhat unclear statement before a final decision needs to be made quickly before the start of the Ligue 2 playoffs, with the first one scheduled to start on Tuesday, May 12.
“Following the incidents and after an announcement by the speaker to calm the madness of the Bastia supporters, it was decided to go back to the locker rooms for the safety of the players. A crisis meeting took place and the decision was made. Given the circumstances, we decided to definitively stop the match,” said Ruddy Buquet, the referee of the match. However, regardless of the final result, SC Bastia has been relegated to Ligue 3 after Laval’s victory against Boulogne-sur-Mer.
