It is a literary shock which is at the origin of the film by the Italian Laura Samani An Italian year. What a novel (A year of school), Giani Stuparich wrote it in 1929 but this moment in life when we slowly enter adulthood is timeless. The director discovered the book in 2007: it was included in her high school program. It struck her so much that she created a scenario full of life.
Best Actor Award in Venice
2007, in a high school in Trieste. Fred, 17, arrives from his native Sweden. His father has just been transferred to Italy, he is responsible for carrying out layoffs in the local company. Fred is pretty, a good student and inevitably intriguing since she is a foreigner. She gets closer to Antero (Giacomo Covi), also one of the best students in the class. He is inseparable from his two best friends: Mitis (Samuel Volturno) and Pasini (Pietro Giustolisi). The first is pleasant, rather easy to live with, the second remains marked by the accidental death of his brother.
From drunken evenings to games of truth, the quartet becomes closer and closer. But it is with Antero that Fred (Stella Wendick) begins an affair while Pasini is also in love with her. Relations will then become complicated, reaching a final point of tension.
With An Italian year everyone can rediscover this moment of life that we have all experienced or that some will soon experience. We witness the rather stupid and sexist jokes of certain boys in the class, the games of seduction so important at this age, the friendship put to the test of love and desire. All four beginners, Stella Wendick, Pietro Giustolisi, Samuel Volturno and Giacomo Covi are very convincing. Giacomo Covi was awarded the best actor prize in Venice.
