Léon Marchand is set to return to competition. As the “Speedo Fort Lauderdale Open” approaches, scheduled from April 29 to May 2 in the United States, the global swimming star is gearing up for the French Championships in Saint-Étienne (June 27-July 2), his first competition on French soil since his success at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Looking to participate for the first time in his career in the European Championships, to be held in Saint-Denis from August 10 to 16, the quadruple Olympic gold medalist has been pushing through demanding training sessions for weeks.
Beyond training, the Toulouse native is making use of his free time outside the pool to meet other top athletes—starting with Kylian Mbappé, with whom he exchanged words during the French team’s American tour in March. “I was invited to watch the France-Brazil match in Boston,” he mentioned in an interview with RMC Sport.
Referring to his visit to the French team’s hotel on March 26, Léon Marchand recalls, “It was quite strange for me, I won’t lie. I normally see the French national football team on TV but not in person. Suddenly, I found myself in a discussion with Didier Deschamps, Kylian Mbappé, and the federation president (Philippe Diallo).”
He also shared his encounter with Victor Wembanyama, praising the young player’s remarkable season and leadership qualities on and off the court. Marchand emphasized their good relationship and the unique qualities he sees in Wembanyama.
