A report released on June 9 indicated that 65 conflicts involved at least one government force, the highest number since the data system was established in 1946. An estimated 245,000 people will be killed in conflict-related violence in 2025, making it one of the deadliest periods of recent decades.

The researchers note that the current global situation is “significantly more fragmented”, with an “unprecedented” number of simultaneous flashpoints of tension, resulting from both long-standing crises and new widespread conflicts. The report cites in particular the escalation of tensions in Ukraine, the conflict in Gaza and the civil war in Sudan.

Note that the number of conflicts between countries doubled in 2025 compared to the previous year, reaching a record eight incidents, including tensions between India and Pakistan, Afghanistan and Pakistan, as well as Cambodia and Thailand.

According to PRIO, 65 conflicts have been recorded in 35 countries, many of them involved in several areas of tension simultaneously. For example, Israel is allegedly involved in conflicts in Gaza, Syria, Lebanon, Iran and Yemen; while Myanmar, Pakistan and Nigeria are also facing several armed conflicts.

Africa remains the area most affected by conflict-related violence, followed by Asia, the Middle East, the Americas and Europe. The report also indicates that more than 930,000 people have been killed in armed conflicts since 2021, a number almost equal to the total death toll of the previous two decades.
