THE anti-slavery movements Were they all inspired by an ideal of a cosmopolitan society? This is the question asked in an international conference which has been held since yesterday, Thursday June 18, at the National Library of France and the College of France.

During the various presentations, the subject is approached from several aspects: compare abolitionist currents in the world and their diversity, or even analyze the the process of d’émancipation.

Abolitionist figures in history

In the debates, abolitionist figures are mentioned, such as that of Abbé Grégoire. The researcher and philosopher Gabriel Darriulat studied his ideas. For him, the thoughts of Abbé Grégoire cannot be understood without his faith:

His abolitionist thought is intrinsically linked to his conception of Christianity, of a God who is no stranger to anyone and who must integrate all of humanity. He had important contacts with Haiti. He wanted to strengthen Christianity in Haiti. He wrote numerous texts for catechism among the Haitians. He was in contact with Toussaint Louverture to hire French priests who would come and settle on the island. His abolitionist approach is really linked to this concept of extending the Christian religion throughout the world.
