Atlanticist and eurosceptic in substance, pugnacious and committed in form, it is the conservative newspaper of reference. Founded in 1855, as its title recalls in homage to then revolutionary communication technology, it is the last of the major national dailies not to have abandoned the large format.
Held until the beginning of 2004 by the press magnate Conrad Black, the title was then the property of the billionaire brothers David and Frederick Barclay. In 2023, against a backdrop of financial standoff, the newspaper was seized by the creditors of the Barclay family, who began looking for a new owner, as well as The Sunday Telegraphgrouped within Telegraph Media Group Holdings Ltd. After three years of twists and turns, the sales process, much commented on across the Channel, culminated in early 2026 with a takeover by the German Axel Springer (The world, Bild, Politico) for a whopping 660 million euros.
Its diary is very popular, in particular because of the Court Circular, which presents the activities of the royal family every day. Another highly anticipated event is Matt’s little drawing, always elegant and funny, published on the front page.
