Since its establishment more than 35 years ago, generations of Vietnam News (Vietnam News Agency) contributors, journalists and editors have steadfastly cultivated and maintained the identity of a national foreign affairs publication, while constantly innovating to adapt to the evolution of modern journalism.
This was the statement made by Ms. Vu Viet Trang, Member of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee of Central Agencies of the Party, Deputy Head of the Central Department of Propaganda and Mass Mobilization, Secretary of the Party Committee and General Director of the Vietnam News Agency, during the ceremony commemorating the 35th anniversary of the publication of the first issue of the journal (June 17, 1991 – June 17, 2026).
The commemorative ceremony took place solemnly on June 17 at the National News Agency Center in Hanoi.

In 1991, the first issue of Vietnam News reached readers at a time when Vietnam had just entered the early years of its Doi Moi (Renovation) process and was implementing strategic directions aimed at economic development, expansion of relations foreign affairs and integration into the region and the world.
From a four-page black and white print newspaper launched in 1991, Vietnam News today offers a stable 24-page publication Monday to Friday, as well as the weekly Vietnam News Weekend. Since 1998, Vietnam News Online has been available online, marking a new stage in its development in the digital age.

To this day, Vietnam News remains Vietnam’s first and only English-language daily newspaper. In addition to its dominant position on the national market, its notoriety is gradually spreading on a regional scale. Vietnam News is also an active member of Asia News Network (ANN), a prestigious media alliance of 20 major Asian dailies, which works for cooperation and sharing of reliable information between regional publications.
On March 1, 2025, Vietnam News merged with the Vietnam Law & Legal Forum magazine to form the editorial office of Vietnam News and Law, in accordance with the policy of organizational restructuring and rationalization set out in Resolution No. 18-NQ/TW of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam. This development has opened up new development prospects for the editorial staff, which simultaneously fulfills the missions of an English-speaking daily foreign policy newspaper and a legal magazine specializing in the dissemination of information on foreign affairs.
The Director General of the Vietnam News Agency said Vietnam News has effectively fulfilled its role as an important information channel on foreign policy, promptly conveying Party directives and policies, as well as state laws and regulations; by vividly reflecting the country’s development achievements; and contributing to strengthening the position, prestige and image of Vietnam on the international stage.

At the ceremony, Mr. Nguyen Minh, Editor-in-Chief of Vietnam News and Law, highlighted: “Vietnam News constantly strives to meet international journalistic standards, providing news in English from diverse perspectives, to make it accessible and understandable for an international readership. This is also an important factor that contributes to making Vietnam News one of Vietnam’s most influential English-language news brands in the field of international news.”

During the celebration, Mariam J. Sherman, World Bank Director of Operations for Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos, said Vietnam News holds a special place in the hearts of many foreign readers in Vietnam.
“As Vietnam’s leading English-language daily, Vietnam News has long played a vital role in helping us understand the debates that shape our country. It is often the first newspaper we read each morning and the most insightful analysis of the salient issues of the day,” said Mariam J. Sherman.

A regular reader of the newspaper, Australian Ambassador to Vietnam, Gillian Bird, also said that Vietnam News is an extremely useful English-language publication.
“You brought the history of Vietnam to English-speaking readers around the world. Whether you are diplomats, investors, tourists or anyone working in Vietnam, you have helped tell the story of Vietnam – its development, its people and its culture – to the world,” the ambassador said.
In order to continue fulfilling its role as a national English-language newspaper specializing in foreign affairs, the Director General of the Vietnam News Agency asked the editorial staff of Vietnam News and Law to actively and proactively implement the resolution of the 14th National Party Congress, resolutions of Party committees at all levels, especially strategic resolutions on scientific and technological development, innovation, digital transformation and international integration and maximize resources to create new momentum for the development of the newspaper in the; period to come.

Newspapers must maintain their pioneering role in external communication in English, affirming the prestige of a national media; accurately and vividly reflecting the country’s development achievements, spreading the image of a peaceful, stable and actively integrated Vietnam, thus contributing to consolidating Vietnam’s position and prestige on the international stage.
Director General Vu Viet Trang urged Vietnam News and Law journalists to continue to innovate their journalistic thinking, develop multi-platform and multi-media journalistic products, focus on audience needs, strengthen interactivity, and improve attractiveness and competitiveness of journalistic products in terms of foreign policy.
“The editorial team must effectively promote the Vietnam News & Law model, closely combining the strengths of foreign affairs journalism and legal journalism in the English language; Develop in-depth media products on Vietnam’s institutions, policies, investment and business environment, and legal system, thereby contributing to improving understanding and strengthening the confidence of the international community in the development and improvement of Vietnam’s socialist rule of law,” he said. underlined Ms. Vu Viet Trang.

During the ceremony, Vietnam News and Law received a certificate of merit from the Director General of the Vietnam News Agency for its outstanding performance during the period 2021-2025, contributing to the development of the Vietnam News Agency, as well as a certificate of merit from the Vietnam Journalists Association for its contribution to information work abroad.
