“It’s no longer possible”
But the most dramatic reality, according to him, is playing out elsewhere, far from our immediate borders. Millions of people displaced, entire populations massacred under the pretext of eradicating tyrannical regimes. “No one is going to mourn Hamas, Hezbollah or the Revolutionary Guards, but under the pretext of dislodging tyrannical regimes, we kill, we massacre entire populations. This is no longer possible.”
-Mgr Lejeune refuses to point to a single culprit. United States, Israel, Iran, Russia: he cites several powers, believing that it would be “too simple to castigate this or that country”. What he denounces is a logic of ego which takes precedence over the common good. “As soon as we see that justice is getting a little too close to our affairs, we start a war. What world do we live in?”
In this regard, he recalls strong words from the Pope: “God does not listen to the prayers of those who want war, and even less of those who wage war.” A message that he considers “very hard”, but necessary. And to add that even the law of war, designed to regulate legitimate violence and avoid unnecessary massacres, is no longer respected by certain major democracies.
