Three individuals broke into the popular LGBTQ bar Lush Theater & Lounge in Northeast Minneapolis overnight and made off with a safe in a quick and orchestrated theft. The break-in, which lasted only about three minutes from the sounding of the alarm to their escape with the safe, was reported by Jared Lawrence, one of the bar’s owners, to 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS. The alarm alerted them at around 4:20 a.m.
Lawrence mentioned, “I think they knew right where to go. I mean, to be in and out in two to three minutes, and to go behind a locked door, up a flight of stairs, they knew right where to look.” The robbery was captured on Lush’s Nest surveillance cameras, with footage showing the individuals by the main doors, breaking in through a glass window, and heading straight upstairs.
Once upstairs, the thieves broke into a locked office using a crowbar and wrestled the safe out. The incident, seen through multiple camera angles, showed the safe being pushed down the stairs and taken out through the front doors. Lawrence described the incident as feeling targeted towards the LGBTQ community and shared their plans to turn Lush Theater & Lounge into an LGBTQ nonprofit space.
The Minneapolis Police Department has received a report on the burglary at Lush. Lawrence expressed disappointment, stating, “What these individuals did is they didn’t just steal from Lush, they stole from the community, and this is a bit of a setback in our goal.” Efforts to secure surveillance footage from neighboring businesses to identify the suspects have not been fruitful, and anyone with information is urged to contact the Minneapolis police.
