For its very first participation in a World Cup, Cape Verde achieved a feat this Monday, June 15, by snatching a draw (0-0) against Spain, 2010 world champion and one of the favorites for the 2026 World Cup.
World champion in 2010 in South Africa, La Roja dominated the game without however managing to deceive the vigilance of the Cape Verdean defense. Well organized tactically, the Cape Verde players resisted the Spanish offensives throughout the match.
A historic first participation
This result is of particular importance for Cape Verde, which is playing the first World Cup in its history. By standing up to one of the greatest nations in world football, the Cape Verdean selection achieved a remarkable entry into the tournament.
This point obtained against Spain could prove decisive in the race to qualify for the next round. For the Spaniards, on the other hand, this misstep is already forcing the team to react during its next outings.
Cape Verde’s presence at this final phase is the result of a good run during the African qualifiers. Housed in group D, the Blue Sharks finished first ahead of major opponents such as Cameroon, Libya, Angola, Eswatini and Mauritius.
This performance notably deprived Cameroon of direct qualification for the World Cup. With several decisive successes, including a large victory (3-0) against Eswatini, the Cape Verdeans confirmed their status as the revelation of African qualifications.
A team supported by its diaspora
The Cape Verdean selection relies largely on players from the diaspora, playing in different European championships. This wealth constitutes one of the strengths of a team which has continued to progress in recent years on the African continent.
Housed in Group H alongside Spain, Saudi Arabia and Uruguay, Cape Verde now has the opportunity to pursue its globalist dream.
