JAKARTA – European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas warned on Monday that the Middle East does not need new conflicts, following escalating tensions between Israel and Iran.

“We have seen a new escalation. This region does not need escalation, but in fact, the parties involved must sit at the negotiating table and reach an agreement,” Kallas said before the bloc’s defense ministers’ meeting in Nicosia, according to the Greek Cypriot administration, WAFA reports (8/6).

Reaffirming that the European Union can help facilitate post-ceasefire efforts, Kallas said the main priority was to ensure a cessation of fighting.

“The ceasefire is eagerly awaited. Let’s stop this war now, open the Strait of Hormuz and then use this time for longer discussions on more difficult topics like nuclear but also other important issues,” Kallas said.

Iran is known to have launched several missile attacks against northern Israel on Sunday evening following an Israeli airstrike in the southern suburbs of Beirut, which Tel Aviv said targeted Hezbollah’s command and planning center. The Israeli attack killed two people and injured 11 others according to provisional reports.

The Iranian attack marks the first strike since the fragile armistice in early April.

A temporary ceasefire mediated by Pakistan was concluded on April 8, but negotiations were subsequently suspended due to differences over its implementation and subsequent regional developments.

Israel responded to the attack by launching airstrikes in the region, before the two countries announced on Monday the end of hostilities, following a call from US President Donald Trump.
