It was this Friday, June 5, that the funeral of Bernadette Chirac took place in Paris, who died at the age of 93 a week earlier, on the evening of June 5. Many personalities went to the Sainte-Clotilde basilica, in the 7th arrondissement, to pay homage to him. They were welcomed in particular by her daughter Claude Chirac, the latter’s husband Frédéric Salat-Baroux and Françoise Dumas.

Martin Rey-Chirac, the grandson of Bernadette and Jacques Chirac, was of course present. His mother had announced that he would be the only one to speak during the mass given to his grandmother.

Brigitte Macron, who succeeded Bernadette Chirac at the head of the Hospital Foundation and the Yellow Pieces operation, made the trip, but without President Emmanuel Macron. Former heads of state Nicolas Sarkozy, who came with his wife Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, and François Hollande were also present.

Among the media personalities who attended Bernadette Chirac’s funeral included Line Renaud, who paid her a beautiful tribute on X, Muriel Robin and his wife Anne Le Nen, and the former president of France Télévisions Patrick de Carolis.

A number of leading politicians also wanted to pay tribute to the former First Lady, including Edouard Philippe, Jack Lang, Jean-Pierre Raffarin, Roselyne Bachelot, Thierry Breton and François Baroin.

Why Bernadette Chirac chose the Sainte-Clotilde basilica for her funeral

The choice of the Sainte-Clotilde basilica was not insignificant. Bernadette Chirac had wanted her funeral to take place in the very place where her destiny had changed, twice. It was there that the young Bernadette Chodron de Courcel married a certain Jacques Chirac on March 16, 1956. It was also there that the funeral of Laurence Chirac, her eldest daughter, took place in 2016.

Note that a tribute to Bernadette Chirac is also planned for this Sunday, June 14, 2026 in Corrèze, of which she was elected general councilor from 1979 to 2015.
