Resilience, I write your name! A few days before the summit of heads of state and government of the G7, from June 15 to 17 in Évian under the French presidency, the mayors of more than fifteen countries signed the Nancy Declaration on June 4 at the end of the International Summit of Mayors, Urban 7.
Objective of this political text: to make the voice of cities heard at the level of international politics.
“Faced with the great challenges of our time, communities are on the front line and have an essential role to play. Cities must be fully involved in decisions that affect our future. With the Nancy Declaration, we are formulating concrete proposals and intend to make them heard by the G7 leaders”assures Mathieu Klein, the mayor of Nancy and president of the Métropole du Grand Nancy, organizers of this summit with France Urbaine (association representing French urban territories).
Territorial diplomacy
The slogan displayed in this text: resilience at all levels, whether climatic, social or economic.
Three major issues emerge: making cities guardians of international peace, democracy and solidarity, strengthening urban and housing resilience and mobilizing cities as drivers of ecological, digital and economic transitions.
“On all the major issues facing the world, cities act on a daily basis”asserts Nathalie Appéré, first vice-president of France Urbaine and mayor of Rennes during the delivery of this text to Michel Fournier, Minister for Rurality.
“This summit marks the importance given to territorial diplomacy (…) We need to have an overall, coherent and shared vision to enable us to build the territories of tomorrow together”assured the minister.
