Israel said on Sunday it struck the southern suburbs of Beirut, stronghold of the pro-Iranian movement Hezbollah, after shots targeted its territory despite a ceasefire.

“The army is currently carrying out a strike against terrorist command centers in the Dahieh neighborhood of Beirut, in response to Hezbollah fire towards Israeli territory,” said a joint statement from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz.

The Lebanese national information agency Ani, for its part, confirmed a strike on the southern suburbs of the Lebanese capital.

Earlier on Sunday, the Israeli army said two projectiles had been fired from Lebanon towards Israeli territory and had been intercepted.

A new ceasefire agreement was announced on Wednesday at the end of a fourth session of negotiations between Lebanon and Israel in Washington, the truce in force from April 17 having never been respected.

This agreement, rejected by Hezbollah, provides for a ceasefire conditional on a “complete cessation” of the shootings of the Shiite group supported by Iran, while allowing a continuation at this stage of shootings and operations by the Israeli army in southern Lebanon.

Israel warned on Thursday that it would strike Beirut in the event of Hezbollah attacks against its territory.
