Catalan Romanesque heritage at the heart of valorization issues

The Catalan Romanesque heritage constitutes one of the most emblematic architectural legacies of medieval Christianity. Spread across the entire territory, numerous Romanesque rural churches still bear witness today to the central role that religious architecture played in the organization of medieval societies.

Despite their historical and artistic wealth, these buildings often remain unknown to the general public. Geographically isolated, sometimes weakened by time, they are still the subject of limited research. Faced with this observation, the ROMTUR cross-border program aims to restore visibility to this heritage by relying on digital tools and new forms of cultural mediation.

ROMTUR: digital technology at the service of Roman heritage

The ROMTUR project, financed as part of the Interreg POCTEFA program, brings together partners from France, Spain and Andorra around a common objective: to promote the Romanesque heritage of historic Catalonia and strengthen the tourist attractiveness of rural areas.

To achieve this objective, several innovative technologies are used:

  • Digitization of heritage corpora;
  • 3D modeling of monuments;
  • Immersive virtual tours;
  • Interactive narratives;
  • Digital cultural mediation devices.

These tools facilitate access to works, monuments and scientific knowledge to a wider audience. They also pave the way for the creation of digital museums and visitor experiences adapted to each heritage site.

Through this international conference, researchers, heritage specialists and cultural actors will question the impact of digital technologies in the transmission of knowledge and the promotion of Romanesque art.

The discussions will focus in particular on:

The contributions of digital technology to research

The speakers will analyze the way in which new technologies contribute to the renewal of studies on Romanesque art and the archeology of buildings, by offering new tools for observation, documentation and interpretation.

The challenges of digital museums

The conference will also address questions related to the institutional recognition of digital museums and their place in contemporary heritage policies.

The evolution of visitor experiences

Finally, participants will explore new forms of cultural mediation, public expectations and the opportunities for territorial development offered by digital devices.

Conferences and visits around the Romanesque heritage of the Pyrénées-Orientales

Beyond scientific communications, several highlights will enrich the program:

  • Présentation des récentes recherches archéologiques menées à Tatzó d’Avall, à Argelès-sur-Mer ;
  • Analyzes of Romanesque architecture and decorations;
  • Visit to the Saint-Jean-le-Vieux church;
  • Discovery of the Romanesque Sculpture Center of Cabestany.

By combining art history, archeology and information and communication sciences, this meeting intends to nourish reflection on current transformations in heritage practices and on new modes of dissemination of knowledge.
