The American president announced Wednesday that he would support Nikol Pashinian for the legislative elections on June 7 in Armenia, a Caucasian country which, in recent years, has distanced itself from Moscow and seeks to strengthen its ties with the West.

Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that he would support Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian for the June 7 legislative elections in Armenia, a test vote for the government of this Caucasian country which recently made a turn towards the West and distanced itself from Russia.

Nikol Pashinian, who froze Armenian participation in a regional alliance headed by Moscow and sought to strengthen ties with Brussels and Washington, benefits from support “complete and total” of the American president, the latter announced in a message on his Truth Social network. This announcement comes the day after a visit by the head of American diplomacy to Yerevan. Marco Rubio renewed the support of the United States for a road and rail corridor project – named in homage to the current American president – passing through Armenia and connecting certain regions of Azerbaijan, a rival country.

The current government of Nikol Pashinian criticizes Russia for not having helped it against Baku during a short war in 2023, which allowed Azerbaijan to reconquer the entire Karabakh region, disputed for decades. Mr. Pashinian even went so far as to mention his country’s potential membership in the European Union (EU), and French President Emmanuel Macron showed himself close to him during a visit in May.

His main opponent during the June 7 elections, Russian-Armenian businessman Samvel Karapetyan, warned against any «ruée reckless» towards the West. The Prime Minister’s party is given the lead in the polls but it is far from being dominant within a very fragmented political system.

Russia remains Armenia’s main trading partner, which depends on Moscow for its arms and energy supplies.
