May 16 (Reuters) – Former British Health Minister Wes Streeting said on Saturday he wanted to stand in any election to succeed Keir Starmer as Labor leader, a few “days” after resigning and urged the British Prime Minister to plan his departure from Downing Street.
“We need a real fight with the best possible candidates, and I will run,†he declared at a “press conference.
Speaking to the Progress group, which brings together Labor supporters who consider themselves to be on the modernizing wing of the party, Wes Streeting called Brexit a “catastrophic mistake” that had weakened the country in a way it had not since before the industrial revolution, arguing that “the United Kingdom should rejoin the European Union.
“We need a special relationship with the European Union, because Britain’s future is linked to Europe and one day – one day – we will “rejoin the European Union,†he said.
This statement comes at a time when British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is facing intense pressure to “leave power due to the fallout from the historic electoral rout recorded by the Labour in the last local elections.
But the Labor leader repeated he would fight to stay in Downing Street.
Andy Burnham, 56, Labor mayor of Greater Manchester, announced on Thursday his intention to run for a vacant parliamentary seat, which could pave the way for him to become a strong competitor to Keir Starmer for the post of Prime Minister.
