The French are worried about the economy. According to an Ipsos BVA survey for La Tribune Dimanche, a huge majority say they are pessimistic about the economic situation of France. The May 10 poll reveals that they are 30% to place the country’s debt and deficits among their three main causes of concern, behind purchasing power and the future of the social system. Supporters of the presidential camp (Renaissance, MoDem and Horizons) are the most concerned, followed by those of the PS (33%) and the RN (33%).

This concern arises from the acceleration of inflation. This one took 2.2% over one year in April, after 1.7% in Marchdriven by the price of oil. Especially since the French “feel that the government has no room to act on the price of fuel”notes Brice Teinturier, general director of the polling institute. In fact, the government has implemented targeted pump aid and not generalized aid, as during the last crisis in 2022. We must still remember that this follows the recommendations from Brussels. But the fact that growth is at a standstill also worries the French. According to the latest estimates from INSEE, GDP did not increase in the last quarter.

But it’s not just the country’s economic situation that makes the French fear it. The same survey reveals that they are 88% have concerns about the state of the global economy. This is disturbed by the war in the Middle East and the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. This situation has a strong impact on the price of oil, and not only in France. Exports to the American market are also disrupted. At issue: the new customs duties imposed by Donald Trump. Although the American president agreed to lower them, they remain particularly high. They are in particular 15% for European Union products exported to the United States.
