The United States is the country where the vast majority of unidentified flying objects have reportedly been sighted. According to the National UFO Reporting Center, out of over 160,000 events recorded, 141,000 occurred in the United States, accounting for 89% of the total.
Since the Roswell incident, considered one of the most convincing pieces of evidence for the existence of extraterrestrial life visiting Earth, the United States has become the global focal point for the study of UFOs.
Ufology has gradually spread to the Anglo-Saxon world, particularly in Canada, where over 6,300 UFO sightings have been reported in the last half-century. Following Canada are the United Kingdom with 4,000 sightings, and Australia with 1,100.
In a November survey conducted by YouGov, 47% of Americans believe that aliens have visited Earth at some point – an 11-point increase from 2012.
Belief in extraterrestrial life is relatively bipartisan, with 45% of Democratic voters and 39% of Republicans thinking that aliens have visited Earth in recent years.
The field of ufology has also gained institutional credibility after the New York Times published videos in 2017 showing flying objects defying the laws of physics. The U.S. Congress has held multiple hearings on the subject, including in 2024, inviting former pilots and intelligence agents.
In February, Barack Obama stated in a podcast that aliens were “real” but clarified that he had not seen them. The media attention prompted Trump to instruct the Pentagon to release government documents related to UFOs and unidentified aerial phenomena. The first batch of documents was made public on May 8, with more to follow in the coming months.
Through a post on Truth Social, Trump encouraged Americans to “have fun” and form their own opinions by reviewing the documents, indicating that no revelations about extraterrestrial life should be expected. This move was seen as part of the administration’s transparency policy, following the Epstein files controversy.
