In Thèreval near Saint-Lô, Thursday May 7, a mine clearance operation took place in the middle and end of the morning. A 100-pound American bomb from the Second World War was discovered during earthworks in the former commune of Hébécrevon. It is most certainly a remnant of Operation Cobra of 1944 during the Battle of Normandy.

50 people evacuated as a precaution

The minesweepers intervened to neutralize the ammunition. To operate in complete safety, a perimeter has been set up, 540 meters around the machine. 50 people were evacuated as a precaution. “The residents concerned were welcomed and taken care of by the municipality throughout the duration of the operation”specifies the prefecture. The bomb was successfully disposed of and it was removed from the site. Three deminers intervened, with the support of 16 police officers for security and traffic and nine firefighters. The prefecture “underlines in particular the exemplary quality of the preparation of the technical file carried out by the municipality, which enabled an efficient and secure organization of the operation”.
