The Italian government on Thursday condemned the seizure of ships belonging to the Global Sumud flotilla by Israeli forces, calling for the immediate release of the Italian activists held during the operation.
In a brief statement, the conservative executive led by Giorgia Meloni urged Israel to “fully respect international law” and ensure the safety of those on board. Flotilla organizers stated that the vessels were intercepted overnight in international waters near Greece.
Italian media reports around 24 Italian nationals are among those detained.
The Meloni government also reiterated its commitment to providing humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip “within the framework of international cooperation and in compliance with international law.”
The flotilla claims that 21 boats were seized on Wednesday night a few miles from Greek territorial waters, while 17 others managed to reach Greek waters. Organizers clarify that the mission carries humanitarian aid destined for Gaza and aims to challenge the naval blockade imposed by Israel.
The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that approximately 175 activists from over 20 boats were “peacefully heading towards Israel.”
The Italian branch of the flotilla denounced an “armed intervention in international waters,” citing it as a violation of international law, and called on Italy and the European Union to engage in diplomatic steps.
Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani indicated that he had instructed the Italian crisis unit and the embassies in Tel Aviv and Athens to seek clarification from the Israeli and Greek authorities and take necessary measures to protect the Italian citizens involved.
The organizers mention a mobilization of around 60 boats and nearly 1,000 activists, departing in recent weeks from ports such as Marseille, Barcelona, and Syracuse. A similar attempt last year was thwarted by the interception of ships in international waters and the expulsion of hundreds of activists.
This new incident comes against a backdrop of fragile truce between Israel and Hamas, concluded in October 2025 after over two years of conflict in the Gaza Strip.
While major fighting has ceased, sporadic violence and disagreements on aid delivery, troop withdrawal, and post-conflict governance continue to hinder the implementation of the subsequent phases of the agreement.
