Negotiations start two days late, but they are all there. The Iranian delegation with the Minister of Foreign Affairs has arrived. American Vice President JD Vance is also on site, accompanied by Donald Trump’s emissaries. In principle, they have 60 days ahead of them to find a solution to the conflict, in this ultra-secure hotel which overlooks Lake Lucerne in Switzerland. Three objectives on the agenda for discussions: the Iranian nuclear program, frozen assets and Iranian oil sales. Problem: the prerequisite for the Iranians is that the fighting stops in Lebanon. This is what the agreement signed on Wednesday provides. However, strikes in the south and east of Lebanon left 30 people dead this Saturday, June 20.
In response, the spokesperson for Iranian diplomacy warned that the memorandum of understanding was in danger and Iran announced a new closure of the Strait of Hormuz. As he left the United States, JD Vance acknowledged that the ceasefire was a challenge, but was optimistic. “I can only stay there for a day or two. I hope that we will make progress on the nuclear issue and on the issue of the ceasefire in Lebanon”declared the American vice president. Just before the start of the talks, Iran reaffirmed that it would not give up continuing its uranium enrichment program.
