Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni responded to new criticism from US President Donald Trump on Saturday, rejecting his comments regarding his popularity and Italy’s stance on US military operations linked to Iran.

“President Trump, these constant and unprovoked attacks are meaningless,” Giorgia Meloni said on Instagram.

She said her popularity depends on her ability to defend Italy’s national interests, adding that this is what she has always done.

The head of the Italian government also reacted to criticism from Donald Trump regarding American military installations in Italy, recalling that their use is regulated by bilateral agreements.

“Their use is governed by agreements that we have always respected and which cannot be violated as long as I am Prime Minister,” she declared.

“Italy remains a sovereign nation,” she added, specifying: “Whatever happens, my popularity does not concern you. I suggest you focus on yours. HAS”

This exchange follows statements published by Donald Trump on Truth Social, in which he claims that Giorgia Meloni allegedly sought several times to obtain a photo with him during the last G7 summit in France, and accuses him of having refused American requests linked to efforts to prevent Iran from acquiring the nuclear weapon.

Donald Trump also criticized Italy for not having authorized the use of American runways and air bases, citing a “significant logistical embarrassment”, while recalling that Washington strongly contributes to Italy’s security within NATO.

The American president finally affirmed that Giorgia Meloni was seeking to restore relations with him after a so-called “military victory” of the United States over Iran, an assertion that he linked to his internal political situation.
