A few days before its entry into contention in the 2026 World Cup, Ecuador is moving away from the spotlight, focused on the big favorite nations. However, behind this outsider status, the South American selection presents solid arguments and a very encouraging dynamic. Absent from the circle of contenders for the title, it nonetheless remains a team capable of creating a surprise, with the stated ambition of doing much better than in 2022. During the last World Cup in Qatar, Ecuador was eliminated in the group stage, finishing third in Group A behind the Netherlands and Senegal, with a draw against the Dutch and a defeat against the Lions of Teranga.
Since then, the dynamic has clearly evolved. Undefeated in its last recent matches, the selection led by Sebastián Beccacece displays notable collective solidity. During the March rally, Willian Pacho’s teammates notably held off the Netherlands (1-1) and Morocco (1-1), two high-level opponents, confirming a particularly robust defensive base. In 2025, Ecuador also made an impression by winning against Argentina (1-0), thanks to a goal from Valencia, during the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. Above all, the selection finished in a remarkable second place in the qualifiers. South Americans, ahead of Brazil, Colombia, Uruguay and Paraguay, only Lionel Messi’s Argentina having done better. The last Ecuadorian defeat dates back to September 2024, against Brazil (1-0), on a goal from Rodrygo. Enough to scare his future adversaries.
A very solid squad defensively
Beyond the results, it is also the rise in power of a workforce still unknown to the general public which calls out. The official list of 26 players revealed by Beccacece highlights several high-level players playing in the biggest European championships. We find there in particular Willian Pacho, defender of PSG and logically considered one of the best in the world in his position, but also Piero Hincapié, finalist of the C1 with Arsenal, Moisés Caicedo, executive of Chelsea, or even Pervis Estupiñán, left side of AC Milan. Added to this is the presence of the young nugget Kendry Páez (River Plate), symbol of an ambitious generation already competitive at the highest level. A homogeneous group, ultra-solid defensively and increasingly strong in big matches.

In a tough Group E including Germany, Curaçao and Ivory Coast, Ecuador will have to confirm this rise in power on the world stage. If the South American selection is not the favorite, it nevertheless has the necessary arguments to shake up the hierarchy and aim for qualification for the direct elimination phase. Faced with experienced opponents, the Ecuadorians will have to capitalize on their collective rigor and their positive dynamic. One thing is certain: it would be risky to underestimate a team which arrives with so much confidence and certainty, and which has not lost in almost a year and a half. Willian Pacho’s teammates will face Ivory Coast for their entry into the competition, this Monday, June 15.
