“The Yemeni armed forces launched a barrage of missiles targeting sensitive sites of the Israeli enemy,” rebel military spokesperson Yahya Saree said in a statement.

Yemen’s Houthi rebels, allies of Iran, claimed responsibility for a missile attack against Israel on Monday and decreed a ban on Israeli navigation in the Red Sea, raising fears of further disruptions on this strategic sea route. “Yemeni armed forces launched a barrage of missiles targeting sensitive sites of the Israeli enemy”affirmed in a press release the military spokesperson of the rebels, Yahya Saree, also announcing “a total ban on Israeli navigation in the Red Sea”.

“Any enemy movement will be considered a legitimate military target”et “we will respond to escalation with escalation”he added. The Israeli army indicated on Monday that it had identified a missile strike towards Israeli territory from Yemen. The rebels, who control large swathes of Yemen, joined the war in the Middle East on March 28 in support of Tehran. They had launched several missiles towards Israel at the end of March and beginning of April, before the establishment of a ceasefire, more threatened than ever since the exchanges of fire on Monday between Israel and Iran.

The Houthis had also carried out numerous attacks on ships in the Red Sea during the war between Israel and the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas, claiming to act in solidarity with the Palestinians. The threat of once again disrupting this essential passage for world trade comes at a time when the Strait of Hormuz, the gateway to the Gulf, is already virtually blocked by Iran.
