Israel secretly deployed elite military and intelligence units to Azerbaijan during the war against Iran, according to a report published Friday by CNN. Citing several sources close to the matter, the American channel claims that these forces were part of a network of bases and clandestine sites spread across the Middle East in order to support Israeli operations against the Islamic Republic.
According to the report, Israeli forces were operating from several positions in southern Azerbaijan, close to Iran’s northern border. One of these sites was about 96 kilometers from Tabriz, a large city in northwestern Iran which was targeted by Israeli strikes during the conflict.
According to sources cited by CNNcommando units were deployed in the region to carry out intelligence missions and coordinate the use of drones. This presence would have offered Israel a privileged observation capacity over northern Iran and strengthened its means of surveillance during military operations.
The American media also claims that the installations located in Azerbaijan were part of a larger system including other secret sites established in several countries in the region, notably in Iraq, the United Arab Emirates and Somaliland. Initially designed as bases for emergency rescue and extraction operations, these infrastructures would have gradually acquired broader military and intelligence functions.
Always according to CNNthe detachment present in Azerbaijan numbered several dozen men, including members of the Israeli special forces, fighters from an elite search and rescue unit of the air force as well as Mossad agents.
Neither Israel nor Azerbaijan have officially commented on this information, which highlights the strategic importance of the geographical proximity between Azerbaijan and Iran in the context of intelligence activities carried out against Tehran.
