The United States highlights the role of regional actors
During a hearing before the Foreign Affairs Committee of the House of Representatives, Marco Rubio affirmed that the Sudanese conflict was now fueled by rivalries between several countries in the region. The head of American diplomacy notably mentioned the differences between the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia, believing that they considerably complicated mediation efforts aimed at putting an end to the fighting.
The accusations against Abu Dhabi
Since the start of the war, the Sudanese authorities have regularly accused the United Arab Emirates of supporting the paramilitaries of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), in conflict with the regular army. Abu Dhabi firmly rejects these accusations, despite several international reports indicating support presumed to be in the FSR.
Humanitarian aid difficult to deliver
Marco Rubio indicated that the United States was working to identify several cities that could serve as distribution centers for humanitarian aid. However, he regretted that the agreements concluded between the parties were regularly called into question, slowing down attempts at a truce and the populations’ access to assistance.
