A massive military operation had been feared for several days by the Ukrainians. Moscow threatened to strike hard. On the night of Monday June 1 to Tuesday June 2, kyiv caught fire. A rain of drones and missiles fell on several residential areas.
Moscow claims to have targeted military and industrial sites, but at the foot of the buildings, there are indeed civilians, and dozens are injured. “I was lucky. The explosion hit me, but only superficially. Now I have nowhere to go. My apartment is destroyed,” deplores a woman.
Many Ukrainians, although accustomed to the noise and the threat, joined the bowels of the metro. More than 100 meters underground, it is the safest place. Inside, everyone holds their breath.
A hellish night also in the east of the country, in Kharkiv. Firefighters fought the flames for a long time. A man was awakened at 1 a.m. by multiple explosions. “Fortunately I had a good curtain which retained some of the shards of glass. So I can say that overall, we are doing pretty well”he shares. Because the Kharkiv region is very close to the front line and under sustained hostile fire, Ukrainian authorities ordered the evacuation of 7,000 people.
In Dnipro, among the wrecked cars, anger rises. The night’s strikes left 15 dead, including 2 children. “The Russians are bastards, I hate them and yet I am Russian. They destroy ordinary buildings”, says a woman. The Ukrainian president is once again calling for American help. The country lacks air defense to stop Russian missiles against civilians.
