LIVE – War in the Middle East: Donald Trump "not satisfied" Iranian proposals

LEBANON

An Israeli strike killed a woman and two children on Thursday in a town on the edge of the southern suburbs of Beirut, stronghold of the pro-Iranian Hezbollah movement, the Lebanese Health Ministry announced.

“The attack by the Israeli enemy against the town of Choueifat resulted in a final death toll of three martyrs – a woman and her granddaughter, as well as a child of Syrian nationality – and 15 wounded, including three children and five women,” he said in a statement.

Earlier, the Israeli army said it had carried out a “targeted strike” in the capital, without giving further details.

AIRLINES

A Donald Trump minister announced Thursday that the United States wanted to block the operations of Iranian airlines to increase pressure on the authorities in Tehran.

“We will cut off the two Iranian airlines’ access to landing sites, refueling and ticket sales,” Finance Minister Scott Bessent said in a message on the social network X. The Treasury Secretary did not give names.

The United States previously placed Iran Air and Mahan Air on its list of sanctioned organizations to prohibit American companies and citizens from doing business with them. Later, during a press briefing at the White House, Scott Bessent clarified that travel for religious or humanitarian reasons would not be affected.

THE FRAMEWORK OF AN AGREEMENT FINALLY FOUND?

The United States and Iran have established a framework of agreement which provides for an extension of the ceasefire by 60 days but which has not yet been validated by Donald Trump, American sources told AFP on Thursday.

The information was first revealed by the Axios site, according to which this preliminary agreement does not resolve the question of the Iranian nuclear program but opens the way to more in-depth negotiations on this subject.

WASHINGTON MENACE OMAN

The American Minister of Finance threatened Thursday to sanction the Sultanate of Oman, an ally of the United States, in the event of cooperation with Tehran for the control of the Strait of Hormuz.

“The United States government will not tolerate any attempt to establish a toll system in the Strait of Hormuz,” Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent wrote on X.

“Oman, in particular, must know that the US Treasury will relentlessly attack any actor involved – directly or indirectly – in the establishment of a toll in the strait, and that any complicit partner will be sanctioned,” he added.

HIM

The Israeli ambassador to the UN announced Thursday the suspension of relations with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, thus denouncing the not yet public decision to include Israel on the “black list” linked to sexual violence during conflicts.

“We are done with this secretary general,” Danny Danon declared in a video message posted on December 31, 2026.

“The decision to blacklist Israel and accuse us of using sexual violence as a weapon of war is scandalous,” insisted the ambassador, accusing the secretary general of putting Hamas and Israel on the same level.

THE ISRAELI GOVERNMENT WANTS TO CONTROL 70% OF THE GAZA STRIP

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Thursday that he had ordered the Israeli army to ignore the terms of the ceasefire that came into force in October and take control of 70% of the Gaza Strip, according to a video broadcast by a Israeli television.

“Right now we have the (Palestinian Islamist movement) Hamas by the throat. We now control 60% of the territory of the (Gaza) Strip. You know, we were at 50 (after the ceasefire came into force), we went to 60, my directive is to go to (…) 70”, declared Mr. Netanyahu during a conference in the occupied West Bank, of which Channel 12 broadcast an extract on its site.

IRAN PROMISES “FIRM RESPONSE”

The Revolutionary Guards warned the United States on Thursday against a “firm response” in the event of a new attack, after American strikes on the south of the country. “If this action is repeated, the American army will be exposed to a firm response,” wrote Tehran’s ideological army in a statement published on its Sepah News site.

THE UNITED STATES ALSO DENOUNCES A “VIOLATION” OF THE CEASEFIRE

“Iran launched a ballistic missile against Kuwait, which was successfully intercepted by Kuwaiti forces. This flagrant violation of the ceasefire by the Iranian regime comes hours after the launch by Iranian forces of five drones which posed a clear threat to the Strait of Hormuz and its surroundings,” wrote the US military command for the Middle East (Centcom) on X, stressing that the drones were intercepted.

“TARGETED STRIKE” BY IDF IN BEIRUT

The Israeli army announced Thursday that it had carried out a “targeted strike” in Beirut, with a Lebanese military source reporting to AFP a strike on an apartment south of the capital. The army “recently carried out a targeted strike in Beirut”, said a military press release, without giving further details. Furthermore, at least 14 people died Thursday in other Israeli bombings in southern Lebanon, according to the Lebanese authorities.

KUWAIT DENOUNCES “DANGEROUS ESCALATION”

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed its “strongest condemnation of the Iranian criminal attacks which targeted the territory of the State of Kuwait with missiles and drones, in a dangerous escalation”. The Iranian Revolutionary Guards had earlier announced that they had targeted an American base, without specifying which one, in retaliation for American strikes in recent days on southern Iran.

UNITED STATES AND ISRAEL SEEK TO “PUT THE NATION ON THE KNEES” ACCORDING TO IRANIAN SUPREME GUIDE

Iranian Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei said Thursday that the United States and Israel were seeking to “bring the nation to its knees” after recent clashes between these countries and Iran, the most serious since a truce came into force on April 8. “The blind plan of the enemy (…) is to create division and destruction in order to compensate for its military defeats, and to bring the nation to its knees,” said Mojtaba Khamenei in a written statement broadcast by state television, calling once again for national unity and to the “cohesion” of the Iranians.

After ordering residents of several neighborhoods of Tire to evacuate in anticipation of a future “use of force”, the Israeli army confirmed that it had “begun to strike Hezbollah infrastructure in the Tire region”.

HELLO EVERYONE

Hello everyone in this live broadcast from Thursday May 28 dedicated to the war in the Middle East.

Donald Trump said Wednesday that he was not “not satisfied” for the moment Iran’s proposals for an agreement ending the war, while remaining evasive on the ongoing negotiations. Iran “really wants to make a deal. They’re not there yet. We’re not happy but we will be eventually. We will be satisfied eventually. Or we’ll just have to finish the job”affirmed the American president during a council of ministers at the White House.

Tehran on Wednesday considered a resumption of hostilities with the United States unlikely, despite recent American strikes, against a backdrop of renewed optimism on the markets, where oil prices were falling. Donald Trump also assured that the prospect of the legislative elections in the fall played no role in his management of this war, while it contributes to the increase in the cost of living for households: “They (the Iranians, editor’s note) thought they could play for time. ‘We’re going to play for time, he has to take care of the midterms’. I don’t care about the midterms”at-il déclaré.

What are the Abraham Accords that Trump is talking about in his negotiations with Iran?

Regarding the Strait of Hormuz, a major issue in discussions with Tehran, the American president declared that he would remain “open to everyone”. “These are international waters. We will monitor it but no one will control it,” he assured. Donald Trump reiterated that he would like the conclusion of an agreement with Iran to be accompanied by an expansion of the “Abraham Accords”, a process that he launched during his first term and which has already seen several Arab countries officially recognize Israel.
