Greece has qfour Hydra-class frigates and called on Thales for their «modernisation»with NS 100 radars and STIR fire control sensorsreports BFMTV. “Thanks to the integration of these new sensors and the latest version of the Tacticos combat management system, the ships will maintain optimal efficiency: the sensors and the combat management system selected for this modernization have proven themselves within several NATO fleets.”specifies the group in a press release.

It must be said that international tensions are intensifying, with the conflict in the Middle East and the war in Ukraine. But Greece also has regular tensions with Turkey, its neighbor. In addition, Athens is a regular customer of Paris. In 2021, it ordered 24 Rafale combat aircraft and three Belharra frigates for 5.5 billion euros. A new frigate was also added last year.

Greece invests 25 billion euros in its defense

Greece is theone of the countries that invests the most in its defense. It is one of the few NATO members to devote more than 3% of its GDP, with Poland, Estonia and Latvia. It also plans an overhaul of its army over 12 years, for a budget of approximately 25 billion euros. Concerning the order from Thales, it comes after Emmanuel Macron’s official visit to Athens at the end of April, when the Franco-Greek agreement was renewed.
