(Multimedia) Chinese Defense Ministry urges Japan to face history, take concrete steps to atone for its crimes

BEIJING, May 9 (Xinhua) — A spokesperson for China’s Ministry of National Defense on Saturday urged the Japanese side to show courage to face history and take concrete measures to atone for Japan’s crimes, denouncing Tokyo’s new offensive in favor of constitutional revision and military expansion.

“The call of our times is for peace and cooperation rather than war and confrontation,” Jiang Bin, spokesperson for the Ministry of National Defense, said at a press briefing.

Mr. Jiang made the remarks in response to a question about Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s recent visits to Australia and Vietnam, during which she touted a so-called updated vision of a “free and open Indo-Pacific” and claimed that Japan’s post-war Constitution, written under American military occupation, had to be periodically updated to meet the demands of the time.

Under the pretext of a so-called “free and open Indo-Pacific” and “security cooperation”, the Japanese authorities are fueling bloc confrontation and creating “small circles”, Jiang noted. “This undermines the strategic security and interests of other countries, and serves as an excuse for Japan to free itself from restrictions on its military development, which we strongly oppose.” â–
