Threats concerning Kiev and Ormuz overwhelm Donetsk. The turmoil of current events is such that one war drives out another. Have we forgotten that the one in Ukraine has been going on for over four years?
Over the past four years, this war has evolved – from the infantry’s initial defense trenches to the now essential drone strikes. It has demonstrated the significant role that ingenuity combined with courage play.
Despite presumed inferiority, inevitable desertions, command failures, and natural fatigue, the Ukrainian army has done more than just resist. Initially overwhelmed by Russian forces, they have regained much lost territory and redoubled efforts to retain their gains in a superhuman context, leading to a somewhat stabilized front. Russian missiles, which used to target mainly military objectives, now aim at energy infrastructures to demoralize the population. However, the Ukrainians continue to show resilience despite fear, deprivation, and exhaustion. They understand that resistance is their only salvation and a testament to their commitment to live freely.
But is the world still listening to this message, or has the surge in oil prices due to the Ormuz situation shifted priorities? The hesitations of American President Donald Trump are not reassuring. Despite claims to seek peace by the end of summer, neither Volodymyr Zelensky nor especially Vladimir Putin seem willing to make concessions – potentially prolonging the war until the courage of the fighters is worn out. Should the US sacrifice Ukraine for their conflict with Iran, it would be a cowardly and disastrous abandonment, opening the door to Kremlin’s territorial ambitions.
Only Europe, despite being mocked by the American President, continues to provide substantial support for the Ukrainian cause. Recently, the European Union, which has already granted 190 billion euros to Ukraine since the start of the Russian aggression, approved a new package of 90 billion euros. The President of the European Council, Portuguese Antonio Costa, expressed his support for Ukraine, stating they will stand with them as long as necessary and no matter the cost.
This “European front,” in which France steadfastly participates, reveals a solidarity that shows no sign of wavering. It’s as if this war is also ours – the struggle of a people fighting for our values. Forgetting about it would be a mistake on our part.
