Twelve wolf hunters are participating in the OFB training on sheep herd defense against wolves on Wednesday, April 15th. The training lasts about 6 hours and includes a theoretical part (knowledge about wolf biology, safety, regulatory framework…) with a small written exam in the form of a questionnaire. Then a practical part with a night shooting exercise using thermal goggles on targets.
Two wolves were shot in the department in 2025 All 33 wolf lieutenants in Doubs will undergo this training this week. Since the regulatory changes, this training is now “qualifying”, meaning it grants authorization to practice these defense shots against wolves. Without this qualification, wolf hunters no longer have the right to engage in these nocturnal defense shots in the department.
According to the Doubs Territory Directorate, in 2025 in Doubs, 37 wolf operations were carried out, with 5 wolves spotted, 3 shots fired, and 2 wolves shot.
The DTT also notes that the number of wolf attacks has generally decreased in 2025 compared to previous years. A decrease that is attributed mainly to significant culling operations carried out on the other side of the border, in Switzerland.
