From March 31st to April 2nd, 2026, representatives from NATO’s Defense and Security Cooperation Directorate visited Baku, where they met with the leadership and staff of the Azerbaijan National Defense University and associated military educational institutions. The purpose of this visit was to assess the ongoing reforms under NATO’s Defense Education Enhancement Program (DEEP).
The commanders of Azerbaijani military training institutions reported on the progress made so far. At the request of the Azerbaijani Ministry of Defense, the DEEP will continue to be used for faculty development activities, curriculum development, and ensuring English courses and tests align with NATO standards.
Following a visit from DEEP experts at the end of last year, it was agreed that the implementation of capabilities to manage an online training platform would be expanded across Azerbaijan’s military education network.
In response to a request from the Azerbaijani Ministry of Defense, and following a later visit this year, the DEEP is expected to be utilized for the development of non-commissioned officers, enhancing interoperability with NATO.
Major General Hussein Mahmudov, special advisor at the Azerbaijan War College, praised the support provided by the DEEP and the new momentum for the region since the August 8th peace declaration.
