Highlighting the new vision of a constructive relationship of strategic stability between China and the United States, the article emphasizes the importance of state leader diplomacy in guiding bilateral relations and stresses that both countries have more to gain by cooperating than by confronting.
BEIJING, May 15, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — During a historic meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump in Beijing last Thursday, the two state leaders agreed on a new vision for a constructive China-US relationship focused on strategic stability, a framework intended to provide strategic guidance for the relations between the two countries over the next three years and beyond.
During the talks that lasted over two hours at the Great Hall of the People, Xi Jinping expressed eagerness to work with the US president to set the course and steer the massive ship of Sino-US relations, making 2026 a historic and defining year that will open a new chapter in bilateral relations.
China-US relations are among the most important bilateral ties in the world where changes and chaos intermingle, and the two countries have more to gain by cooperating than by confronting.
New Vision
Explaining this new vision, Xi Jinping stated that the “constructive strategic stability” should be a positive stability based on cooperation, a healthy stability enabling moderate competition, a consistent stability with manageable differences, and a sustainable stability with promises of peace.
Establishing a constructive relationship between China and the United States under the framework of strategic stability should not be just a slogan, but a tangible action embraced by both parties to achieve the same goal, he emphasized.
Guided by state leader diplomacy, China and the United States have so far maintained overall stability. Xi Jinping underscored the significance for both leaders to navigate the complex international landscape and ensure that the massive ship of relations between China and the United States maintains a steady and enduring course.
Since over a year ago, the two state leaders have maintained good communication, notably through multiple phone calls and a fruitful meeting in Busan, Republic of Korea, to define the direction and path forward for bilateral relations.
Particularly, since the Busan meeting in October of last year, China-US relations have remained generally stable and dynamic, a development widely praised by both countries and the international community.
The positive effects of state leader diplomacy are particularly evident in economic and trade relations. Since 2025, economic and trade teams from both sides have held numerous rounds of consultations and reached positive consensuses.
Economic ties between China and the United States are mutually beneficial by nature, Xi Jinping told Donald Trump. “In case of disagreements and frictions, consultation on an equal footing is the only choice available.”
Echoing Xi Jinping’s view, Donald Trump stated that cooperation between the United States and China could accomplish many important and positive things for both countries and the world.
Wang Yiwei, a professor at Renmin University in China, told CGTN that the most important outcome of the meeting was the new vision that emerged. He said that the development of a constructive relationship between China and the United States would revolve around four areas of stability. “I think this marks a new turning point in China-US relations.”
State leader diplomacy continues to play a strategic guiding role, added Mr. Wang, who expressed confidence that the current state of bilateral relations held considerable practical significance.
Shared Prosperity
More than a dozen American business leaders, including Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, Cristiano Amon, CEO of Qualcomm, and Jensen Huang, CEO of Nvidia, accompanied Donald Trump, reflecting the persistent confidence of American companies in the Chinese market.
The benefits of bilateral economic cooperation are tangible and deeply interconnected. In the Port of Los Angeles, the largest and busiest container port in the United States, around 40% of all freight activities are directly related to trade with China, the port’s top trading partner.
Additionally, Chinese and American companies continue to seek reciprocal investment opportunities. For example, Tesla’s Gigafactory in Shanghai rolled out its 4 millionth vehicle in December 2025, with 95% of the components sourced from China.
The Gigafactory has established a “4-hour supply circle” across the Yangtze River Delta, integrating over 400 top Chinese suppliers. More than 60 suppliers have been integrated into Tesla’s global supply chain, highlighting the deep interdependence of industrial and supply chains between the two countries.
A recent white paper published by the American Chamber of Commerce in China shows that 52% of US-funded companies in China are expected to be profitable in 2025, an increase of 6 percentage points from the previous year. More than half of the surveyed companies continue to rank China among their top three global investment destinations.
During his meeting with American entrepreneurs, Xi Jinping stated that China’s door could only open wider, inviting the United States to strengthen mutually beneficial cooperation with China.
This year, both China and the United States have significant milestones on the agenda. China has entered the period of its 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-2030). The United States is celebrating the 250th anniversary of its independence. Simultaneously, China and the United States will respectively host the APEC economic leaders’ meeting and the G20 summit.
These two events, with significant impacts on global economic governance and driving global development, prompted both state leaders to express support for each other.
As Xi Jinping asserted, success for one creates an opportunity for the other, and a stable bilateral relationship is beneficial for the world.
