The African Football Confederation announced its support for Gianni Infantino’s re-election as FIFA president on Thursday. Infantino’s current term ends in 2027, and the African members of FIFA have unanimously endorsed him for the upcoming elections.

Infantino, who was first elected in 2016 and re-elected in 2019 and 2023, is not yet officially a candidate for his own succession. According to FIFA statutes, the president can serve a maximum of three terms. However, Infantino’s first term, which began in 2016 after the corruption scandal involving his predecessor Sepp Blatter, is considered “incomplete” and does not count towards this limit.

The location and date of the 77th FIFA Congress, where the 211 member countries will vote for the next president in 2027, are expected to be announced during the current congress in Vancouver. The endorsement from the 54 African members comes after similar support from the South American Confederation (Conmebol), which has 10 member countries.
