American actor Sean Penn explains his absolute hatred of selfies, as well as his absence from the Oscars and the decision he made after the Golden Globes.
No doubt, Sean Penn hates selfies. During a discussion organized Friday, June 5 at Spring Studios, in lower Manhattan, as part of the 25th Tribeca Film Festival, the actor was categorical.
“You should never take selfies with anyone. It’s bad for you, it’s bad for everyone. It’s a real scourge,” he declared, according to comments reported by Variety. And he won’t make any exceptions, even if it’s “a Holocaust survivor grandmother and her 6-year-old paraplegic son who approach.” “Out of the question!” he said.
True to himself, he also spoke without filter about the reasons for his absence at the Oscars. “It’s not just an awards ceremony,†he said. “There are too many people.” Having little taste for worldly affairs, Sean Penn said he discussed it with his colleagues from “One Battle After Another” and that they all agreed: it was better for his mental health that he did not attend. Instead, the actor preferred to go to Ukraine, where he tirelessly campaigns to denounce the war led by Russia.
The American actor explains that he still watched the Oscars ceremony from Ukraine. “I was really able to appreciate the Oscars for the first time,” he confided. “It was great.” It was after attending this year’s Golden Globes that he decided never to attend awards ceremonies again, he said.
“I went to the Golden Globes; I had never been there before. And that’s when I decided: “I can’t continue like this.†, he explained. “And it’s not an easy reaction like “I don’t want to be involved in all this fake Hollywood†or something like that (…) “It’s now a lifelong decision that I’m not going anywhere to be in a group of more than eight people.â€
The star says large public gatherings are “terrifying” for him and trigger “anxiety.”
