With “the Cinema in the Square“”, the seventh art will take over three places in the capital: piazza San Cosimato in Trastevere, the parco della Cervelletta in Tor Sapienza and the parco di Monte Ciocci in Valle Aurelia. Screenings will be organized every evening at 9:15 p.m. from Wednesday to Sunday. The Troisi cinema will host three special events.

The series Portobello in opening

The director, Marco Bellocchio, will inaugurate “the Cinema in the Square» by presenting the first three episodes of his new series. Portobello returns to one of the most painful chapters in recent Italian history: the Enzo Tortora case. A great figure on the small screen, Enzo Tortora is the victim of a miscarriage of justice which lands him in prison. He was finally acquitted in 1987, a year before his death. Italian rapper MÂ¥SS KETA and Stefano Nazzi, who delves into this matter in his podcast Investigationswill engage in a discussion with the director.

32 meetings: Léa Seydoux and Jacques Audiard expected in Rome

Distinguished guests will present the films shown, including the French Jacques Audiard and Léa Seydoux. On June 18, in Piazza San Cosimato, the director will present Emilia Perez. His feature film, which won two Oscar statuettes, tells the story of a drug lord’s journey to becoming a woman. The Cannes festival also praised the performance of its cast.

Ten days later, Léa Seydoux will go to the eternal city for a meeting with the public. The actress’s filmography covers a vast cinematic field: from The Life of Adele critically acclaimed 007 Spectre from the James Bond saga.

Retrospectives ranging from blockbusters to Italian classics

From American blockbusters to essential Italian cinema, “the Cinema in the Square“will explore the careers of great directors through retrospectives. As an echo to the exhibition on Ettore Scola, the first series of screenings, from June 3 to 1is July, will be dedicated to Elio Petri. The festival pays tribute to this figure of “political cinema (…)” putting on screen the whims and excesses of power. The public will be able to discover one of his films every Wednesday evening in Piazza San Cosimato.

At the Parco della Cervelletta, Steven Spielberg’s films will be shown on the big screen, from June 7 to July 12.  Every Sunday, the festival will offer a feature film signed by the director of Jurassic Park et ET the extraterrestrial. At the same pace as the Parco della Cervelletta, the Parco de Monte Ciocci will be immersed in the work of Takashi Miike. Over the weeks, it ” Piazza in Cinema» will paint the portrait of this Japanese director with an unclassifiable style.

12e edition, 12 years of support for cinema

“It is our strongest and most sincere anthem. An anthem that began twelve years ago, when we ceased occupation of the historic America cinema in Trastevere which we still hope to acquire and reopen.”declares Valerio Carocci, the president of the Piccolo America Foundation behind this initiative.

In the historic Trastevere district, the America cinema, now abandoned, was occupied by a group of students in 2012 to prevent its demolition. Their fight to save this hall built in the 1950s led to the creation of the Piccolo America foundation in 2014 at the head of the festival.
