Olivia Wilde Responds to Gollum Comparisons with Humor

IN BRIEF – Present at the San Francisco film festival, Olivia Wilde was compared to Gollum after a viral video. She humorously responded on Instagram, sharing an image of Gollum and explaining the fish-eye lens effect. Her new film, The Invite, will be released on September 16, featuring a couple exploring swinging.

There could hardly be a less flattering comparison. Olivia Wilde was present at the San Francisco International Film Festival on May 1 to debut her new movie. The actress from House turned director was caught in an unflattering light, and the video quickly went viral on social media. She responded to the critics on Instagram.

The 42-year-old comedian and filmmaker was one of the festival’s headliners in California until Monday, May 4. It wasn’t the film’s theme of swinging or the cast that got internet users talking, but a video of the director on the red carpet from an interview with media outlet SFGate.

This video captured the actress in a extreme close-up, sparking negative comments about Olivia Wild, with many comparing her to Gollum, the creature from Lord of the Rings.

Olivia Wilde reacted on Instagram on May 3 with a lot of humor. She posted a video in response to a message from her brother Charlie Cockburn. He had written, “Could you respond to the rumors that you are a resurrected corpse?”

With humor, Olivia Wilde displayed Gollum’s head and a screenshot of her face from the SFGate interview. She explained, “Well, yeah, it was shot with a fish-eye lens. I admit, is this my best angle? My best look? No. It’s creepy, it’s a creepy image. I don’t know why I was so close to the lens like that. Anyway, I’m not dead,” she noted.

The film The Invite is a remake of the Spanish film Sentimental by Cesc Gay. The movie, in which she also stars alongside Seth Rogen, depicts a couple plunged into routine and boredom until their neighbors, played by Penélope Cruz and Edward Norton, invite them to their “special evenings.” Her third film behind the camera after Booksmart and Don’t Worry darling will be released on September 16.
